Shipping Faster vs Doing It Right: The Real Trade-off
I used to think this was a binary choice. Either you ship fast or you do it right.
In reality, it’s almost never that clean.
Most real-world projects don’t give you the luxury of perfect decisions.
You’re dealing with:
- Deadlines that won’t move
- Backend dependencies that aren’t ready
- Requirements that are still changing
- Stakeholders who want progress yesterday
So the question isn’t:
“Should we do it fast or do it right?”
The real question is:
“What does right mean in this situation?”
The shift that changed how I approach this
At some point, I stopped treating “doing it right” as perfection.
And started treating it as intentional trade-offs.
Because sometimes:
- Shipping fast is the right decision
- Cutting scope is the right decision
- Even taking on some tech debt is the right decision
If you understand the cost.
What “doing it right” actually looks like (in real life)
It doesn’t always mean clean architecture or perfect abstractions.
Sometimes it means:
- The code is a bit messy, but easy to change
- The solution is not scalable yet, but solves today’s problem
- You avoided overengineering something that might not survive next quarter
And that’s fine.
Because you optimized for context, not for ego.
Where things usually go wrong
Problems don’t come from moving fast. They come from moving fast without awareness.
I’ve seen this play out in different ways:
- “We’ll clean it later” (but later never comes)
- Decisions made without understanding the impact
- Hidden complexity building up quietly over time
Speed is not the issue...Uncontrolled speed is.
How I approach the trade-off now
These are a few things I try to stay honest about:
- Do I understand the risks of this decision?
- If this breaks, do I know where it will hurt?
- Can I isolate this change if needed?
- Are we intentionally taking debt, or just ignoring it?
If I can answer those, I’m usually okay moving fast. If I can’t… that’s where I slow down.
The part nobody likes to admit
Sometimes you know something isn’t the best solution and you ship it anyway. Not because you don’t care.
But because:
- The timeline doesn’t allow it
- The business needs it now
- Or the problem might not even exist in a few weeks
That’s not bad engineering. That’s real-world engineering.
Final thought
The best engineers I’ve worked with are not the ones who always choose “perfect”.
They’re the ones who know:
- When to push for quality
- When to move fast
- And how to live with the trade-offs they make
Because in the end… You’re not optimizing for code. You’re optimizing for outcomes.
